Has anyone got a good method for installing on an early 68-72 passenger door, a chrome mirror ? Has anyone used
those small rubber grommets that some sellers supply, and do they actually work? I've taken off the door panel and there is no way to get
any kind of brace behind the door skin to hold a mirror.
TIA
Yes the rubber grommets do work. That's what my new mirrors came with. worked out OK.
Someone knocked my drivers mirror 1/2 way off before I bought it.
Pulled one of the nuts thru the door. I drilled a hole thru the steel brace behind it and used a longer screw.
If you have to do something like that BE CAREFUL when you drill You CAN hit the glass ( I did )
I installed the right side mirror with the rubber grommets. Worked well, lasting a long time.
So you just use the template and drill the holes (in steps I assume) slide the grommets into the hole and then screw the mounting base down with the provided screws and then mount the mirror. Those supplied screws seem awful short. I'm scared shitless of drilling holes in my doors. If this was during a re-paint I wouldnt mind so much. That why the hesitation

It also scared me. Make sure you measure 5 times and drill once. Compare one side to the other. See if you can find utube videos. Make sure you have the correct drill size. I did have an issue with the mirror being loose. The small set screw that holds the mirror to the mounting bracket had to be adjusted a bit.
0311 jarhead Here... , and YES, there is a way.....go read this thread. Quite fascinating on how to do a metal plate.... I'd go this route before just using rubber grommets.

The issue you might have. If somehow the side mirror gets hit hard, with the rubber grommets, they get pulled out, with the back plate, the side of your door gets ripped off.

I don't know about the OP, but when I get to 85-90 on the toll road my passenger side mirror vibrates pretty badly which I'm sure is stressing the fiber glass. Long term I'm going to have a problem. When I get to it I'm adding 1970 mustang mirrors like I was told were on Motion vettes. I've seen one with them and they look pretty good.

I did it like Dub did in that thread on my 69. Never liked the way it felt with just the well nuts. A lot of work but I believe it was worth it in the end. Much more solidly mounted.
I guess it really comes down to if you want the mirror isolated from the body/door and it's associated vibrations or not. The well nuts will provide a good "rubber" support on both sides of the door skin. If you like the concept but not the rubber or the extra mount plate I suppose you could use Rivnuts but that might overly stress the door skin. I went with the well nuts back in the 90's on my 70 roadster and never had any issue but then I never really saw north of 80 MPH either. If yu're drilling and worried about possibly nicking the glass, easy to use a drill stop on the bit to limit the travel.
