Default Rear bumper removal.

Some of you may recall that I am removing the paint from my 79. I have removed the front bumper, marker lights and the front emblem. Im ready to remove the rear bumper. Is this much harder to do then the front bumper? Is there a diagram on how to do this online somewhere?

How do I remove the mirrors and door handles. They dont look easy to do.

One last question. What is the proper way to prepare the T-Tops for paint. How do I remove the molding around the edges.

Thanks for all your help

The rear bumper mounts with steel reinforcement strips - like the front bumper has.
There are three - one across the top and one down each side.
They should remove similar to the front ones - but easier to access.

If you are replacing your weather stripping on your T-tops then take off the molding. If not I would not advise taking the molding off.
To take the molding off turn them upside down and rip off the weather stripping by the handles. hidden in there are some screws and clips. remove those and pull off the molding. It is fairly easy but the weather stripping will not be re-usable.
Hope this helps

i found my rear bumper alot easier to access then my front. Like the front it was just metal strips with 10-24 nuts on the studs.

:iagree: and buy the little retainer clips from ecklers/MAD/Zip etc. they are much easier to work with.

If you already removed the front bumper the rear should be a breeze. take the nuts off and it should pull off easily. :smash:

Wow. thanks for all the replies guys. Im so happy you say the back bumper will be easier then the front. I thought it would be much harder.

I guess I will have to replace the weather stripping on the T-Tops then. Dont want to, but i dont think I could paint the Ts and do a good job with the metal on them.

What about the door handles, mirrors and the Key holes?

Thanks for all the replies guys. your the best

What about the door handles, mirrors and the Key holes?

for these items, you'll have to remove your door panels to access the back sides of these items. be prepared for scratched, cut hands as working inside the doors always messes with your hands and your temperment.

Gary, Here is the reply to a past post regarding mirror removal that I found worked great! Sure wish I knew who posted this but alas all I copied was the reply. To whoever posted this, thanks a million!!

"This was my solution for the mirrors. You do not need to remove the glass. You can make this wrench from a piece of round 3/8" cold roll steel or a long bolt for that matter. Put a 90 degree bend at the end and then grind that end 1/4" square and jam it in a 7/16" 1/4" drive socket. You can then grind the top of the bend off to give you more clearance if you want. It you need even more clearance, grind some off the top or bottom of the socket as well. Tape the bend with masking tape or the glass so that you won't scratch it. I had my mirrors off in about a minute after I had lost sockets, ratchets and wrenches down inside my door trying to use other methods.

 That sounds like a good tool. got any pics of yours? i think i know what you mean though. I never imagined i would have to take the glass out to get to the mirrors. That job is gonna stink if i cant make this tool. :skep:

Will be back to work on it tomorrow :smash:

Ouch. I have rust in my eye. :smash: Well the bumper is off. not to difficult. but some of the darn nuts just wouldnt move. To much rust they lost their shape. Guess i will have to purchase new retainers just to make the installation easier when it is all painted.

Thanks for all the tips. And now im back to work. :chevy :chevy
