Greetings all. I finally managed to remove the rusted on gas cap and replace it with a new one. My question for you all is: does the gas tank have a red/rust-colered lining. As I look down into the gas tank, I see what looks like a smooth, reddish interior and even though it is not flaky or rusty looking, I want to ask you guys if this is normal. I'm attaching a photo; you may have to zoom in to see the color. Thanks.
I'm thinking you should replace the gas tank. I've replaced two. My 70 tank looked ok on the outside, little dirty sure. In hassling it to get it out, my finger pushed through the metal! It had rusted paper thin. Good news is that an exact repro tank, Quanta, is relatively inexpensive. Bad news is that it a little of a PITA to remove. Remove the exhaust pipes and mufflers, remove the spare tire carrier, remove support crossmember it sits on.
Your tank is most likely original and that is probably rust that you see ,be smart and replace tank before it`s full and then it leaks or the rust gets into the rest of the fuel system.
To me, the tank looks pretty bad. Replace the tank with the Quanta item. It's not a horrible job to replace it, and just takes a little time and patience. You'll save a lot of anguish, and possibly avoid more extensive problems and dollars later. Just my 02.
