Default Suggestions for decent Harmonic Damper puller?

Getting ready to pull the harmonic damper off, and I've never seen or used a puller I've been happy with. I envision one with some sort of thrust bearing on it to make everything turn a bit smoother. Any of you guys have a puller that you've found works fast and smoothly?

Thanks for input here.

I have this unit from Amazon. Works just fine. Apply some anti-seize or grease to the main threads before your first use.

Mike -
I use this one - the ProForm 66514. It has Torrington bearings on the thrust surfaces making the installation smooth and super-easy:
https://www.summitracing.com/parts/pro-66514

Using it to remove a very tightly-pressed balancer:

Smooth and easy installation of the new one:

Same puller being used for removal and installation of the balancer with the engine in the car. Pulling it off:

Balancer removed after about 2 minutes:

Going back on with a new balancer:

Seated and installed. 2 minutes:

Lars

I just went through this in the last month with my 427. For pulling the balancer off, I bought the Harbor Freight puller kit (~$16); worked great with no issues. To reinstall, I bought the Proform 66515 from Summit Racing (~$38). It also worked very well. I was advised to make sure to use an installer with a bearing and this one fits the bill. I also looked at the one Lars recommended above, but felt my future uses would be pretty limited so couldn't see spending the money for that level of tool.

the cheap rental pullers if they fail will not hurt your car. DO NOT use the cheap rental installer. you do not want to screw a tip into your crankshaft that some idiot who makes bubba look like einstein forced into his honda crank and effed up the thread.

I have a very similar one from harbor freight which as works fine the few times Ive used it now. That said If I was a mechanic I would likely have something better. Mine looks identical in every way to what 67:72 posted though so..
I actually had a brain fart and forgot to use the tool to reinstall the balancer and snapped the ARP bolt in my crank... luckily it drilled out like butter and was able to continue with the tool with no issues.

I have a VERY tight damper that needs to come off. My Harbor Freight puller usually does the trick but this one is FIGHTING me hard. The turkey foot puller is bending at the arms and the damper isn't giving in.....That Proform one looks nice so maybe I need it.

I will try one more time by doubling up on the turkey feet as I actually have several of these cheaper pullers. The extra thickness should help. Wish me luck.

My Moroso damper installer tool with the bearing has worked perfectly every time in the past 25 years or so. I would not trust a cheapie tool for that job.

How old is you HF puller? I got mine at HF and its the exact same puller as the proform pictured above by 67:72

EDIT nevermind I think your speaking of the Proform style one Lars shared.

no mine are OLD. I just tried doubling up on the puller heads but it wont work....they have different thread pitches!!!

Derek's idea might just work. I do have an oxy/acetylene smoke wrench.

Pulling the damper off my 427 was a bear. I ruined two part store specials, they bent like wet noodles. I wound up using my buddy’s 50 year old forged puller, a lot of heat and some love taps. I’ll try to dig up some photos tomorrow.

If its the original balancer make sure ther isnt a large washer still on there. I has one that the rubber had engulfed so it looked like it was part of the balancer. You need to pull it out so the puller pushes on the crank and not the pulley

I hadn't considered that someone may leave the washer in there -- very good suggestion to make sure it's not still there when attempting to pull the balancer off. You'd definitely be engaging in a fruitless effort!

Here's a photo of my set up. As you can see I also greased the threads so I wasn't fighting thread friction.

You can save money by renting one at the local auto parts store like Autozone or O'Rielly's. I have always just used one like Chris posted above for removal.

I'm interested in that puller. I need some caffeine at the moment, so please pardon some possibly stupid questions. Is there a threaded snout on it that threads into the crank to keep everything aligned while the pulling force is happening? And which direction is your wratchet turning when you're pulling the damper off (is that LH threads on the front rod/shaft)?

Thanks.
