Alternator Pulley Width - 1979 L48
The crank and water pump appear to have 1/2" wide grooves for the alternator and A/C positions, and a 7/16" groove for the power steering.
The actual pulley on my alternator is 7/16", and the power steering pump is also 7/16.
The parts store lists a 1/2" V belt as the replacement for the alternator belt, but it does not fit into the pulley on my alternator. The belt on the engine before I pulled it was 7/16". Should i just run another 7/16" belt, or does anyone know what the correct pulley should be for the alternator to allow a 1/2" one to be used?
You have to look up parts yourself and not rely on the guy at the store. I went to the NAPA site and looked up your belt and it does NOT show 1/2" belt.
Either Dayco #15540 With Air or #15520 Without Air shows both belts with a pitch of 36* and Width of .44"
The Gates belts are a little under 7/16" and the Dayco is slightly over 7/16".
Your water pump pulley #346299 is correct for your L48 with A/C...
