Default Need help with rear diff

I bought a new rear diff for my ‘68 to swap out. My old diff was from a ‘64 with an open rear and 3.36 gears. The new diff is a supposedly a 3.70 with posi. I bought it from a Corvette shop. It says “LR W 063 E 1”

My issue is that I was swapping it out and I have it out of the car. The front u-joint link is bigger than what came off my car. I figured I could just pop off the old one and swap it with the new one but when I took them off, the thread is different. What do I do now?

the new one has the fine threads

You'll have to get a combination/conversion u-joint. (Example 1310 to 1330)

A conversion u-joint is the easiest route with new straps for 1330 u-joint.

Go find a driveshaft shop. The auto parts stores employees probably won't have any idea what you are talking about.

just for future information, they are not threads, the straight ribs are called "splines".

the thread is on the front of the shaft that the nuts screws onto.

The yoke with the 30 spline is for a 1330 u-joint, typically found on automatic C3s. Your other yoke is for a 1310 u-joint.

Your solution is to get a 30 spline 1310 yoke. These are widely available. You can post a WTB on this forum or you can buy from a reputable supplier.

Your “LR” code doesn’t match any C3 codes I am aware of. There is a CLR for a 1970 3:36 ratio. Have you verified the tooth count on the ring gear?

As mentioned, the new diff has a 1330 30 spline yoke. The 63-4's and some early 65s had the 17-spline pinion yoke you have. The 17 spline pinions were junk and often snapped in half, one reason they stopped using the DANA.

You have more trust than I do if you bought a diff from a vette shop. Now you have the yoke off you need to correctly install either a 1310 or reuse the 1330 with 1310/1330 joint and preload the bearings. You should also replace the seal and axle seals too. I would look very closely inside the new one. I just inspected a vette shop original diff last week, had worn axles and one was std the other HD., They didn't come that way.
Good luck

JD, the guy who posted above your last post GTR1999 is THE authority on these rears. what he says is gospel and if you find that diff needs rework-which most do-you need to discuss the rebuild with him. like all the best in their field, he is usually backed up a bit. and he is also generous with info that we all need.

If this was my mess to deal with I would get the used rear diff sorted out and buy the correct driveshaft to match the diff.

Well, I am sort of in a time crunch. I started the project thinking it looked easy, which it was but I leave town on Tuesday for a few weeks and my wife wants the garage back before I go so here is my game plan.

i am picking up a 1310 to 1330 u joint today. Ill install it all and t least be able to clean the garage and move the car. If at that time it doesnt work or it breaks then Ill take it for a rebuild and go have a talk with the corvette shop. I uave known him for a while and I believe he will help with the rebuild or offset some cost.

I doubt it,
I have been scrounging up the parts for my rearend/2004r auto swap for a year now and have seen these parts online I believe Dennys driveshafts carry these conversion ujoints (ironically they are local to me) but I seen a fe while googling. I ended up finding the correct yoke for my trans/driveshaft since my issue was at the trans end.

From 1971 till 1977 "LR" was used. The stamping began with two letters for the ratio code, a letter for the axle plant, one to three numbers for the Julian day of the year, a letter for the Positraction source, and a number for the shift.

So Your Diff is an LR= 3:36 W= Warren 036= 36th day E= Eaton 1= 1st shift

At least the case is a 3.36. The internals measure 3.70

I found the numbers on the new ring gear and it is 10:37 so it is a 3.70 gear ratio

Looking at your picture tells me more than you have a set of 370 gears. Anyone else see anything?

I'll check back later as day light is burning and the sun is out here in the Northeast.
