Hard warm start.
My '77 383 stroker has been starting hard after being shut down for 45 minutes or so. It starts great cold or if only shut down for a few minutes. It had been running great for 2 years. It is an ATK crate with a 650 Brawler carb. It is not vapor locking. Spring just came here and the hard starts. Any suggestions?
Try some tier one gas and if that does not work change the spacer under the carb. The fuel today gets gooey when in storage. One test you could do is when it is hot spray some carburetor starting fluid and if it turns over you have a dirty carb.Just trying to help! Good Luck

Only a problem when hot....cooking the carb.
Hot start is fine. It's after 45 minutes or more it cranks f or 10 or 15 seconds. Engine is cooling by then. Last summer it was fine even on 90 degree days!

Try moving the throttle on the carb while looking into the throat for the accelerator pump squirt before you restart it. If you don't get a good shot of gas, the carb has no gas left in it. It can boil out and it is even possible to flood the engine that way.

If you confirm you have fuel squirting into the throats, try holding the gas pedal about half way to the floor while starting. This is a start procedure for any warm carb.

Ok.... so I checked the float level and it was about 1/16" above the arrow so I adjusted it to 1/16" below the arrow ! I also set the 4 idle screws back to where the speed shop had them ( about 1/4 turn more closed ) then I added 1/2 tank of fresh race fuel from almost empty and 1/2 can of seafoam. I Also adjusted the idle up slightly to 985 or so. I then went for a twenty mile ride and the car ran great as always. I let the car heat soak for an hour and the fuel level was 1/16" below the arrow. So no percolating ( see 1st post ). The car started after cranking for about 3 seconds which is acceptable to me. Then it started raining so further testing will have to wait till tomorrow!
