Default Coil Spring placement

Have front coil springs out of car and all cleaner and powder coated and want to put back. I am not sure which way to put springs back in.
I have a 1971 SB and believe that the closer coil in spring will go towards the top with lager part of spring towards bottom.
I just can't remember which way. Any help would be appreceiated.  :chevy

Yes, shorter spacings go in the top spring pocket. It's most important that the upper part of the spring is "seated" in the pocket. Put your hand up into the pocket to feel the indentations and then carefully align the spring end to conform with the socket. Otherwise, when you're finished your front end may sit up 2-3 inches higher.

John,

You might check the A.I.M. for coil spring placement on your year. On my 1980 the book shows the end of the spring 0.38" plus or minus 0.12" from the spring stop.

There is a small inspection hole at the top of the coil spring tower where you can see exactly where the end of the spring is relative to the spring stop.

i'm not sure for your year vette, but on a 79 the spring sits in the lower a-arm in such away that when you look thru the little 1/4" hole you should see the end of the spring. all or at least part of this hole should be left open as it lets any water drain out of the a-arm.
