1981 C3 won't start

1981 C3 won't start
New (rebuilt) engine, carburetor, new spark plugs and wires.
Pulled the car out of the gargage ran fine. Turned it off, tried to restart it, and it started and then stalled when i put it in gear. now the engine only cranks. Getting gas and has spark to plugs.
Suggestions?

whining sound coming from exhaust???? 30 year old exhaust systen no holes ..new exhaust manifolds removed the air pump system when the rebuild was installed sounds like a bearing whining

Isn't it a great feeling when you can solve the problem yourself? I love that feeling when I run into a roadblock and find the solution all by yourself.

You mention a "whining" from the exhaust, that is strange indeed. It isn't a whistling but a whining that you are hearing? I would be double checking looking for a leak someplace that might be causing the sound. Where do you hear the sound that you are describing?
