Default Torque Converter

Well, I'm really close to getting my engine reinstalled into the car, however... I don't know about all ya-all, but I seem to take one step forward and two steps back, Ugh! My latest debacle is the torque converter that I ordered before getting the old one off the trans. The problem is the mounting connectors, that is, how many there are. The GM one I took out has 6 connectors and the one I ordered has 3. I didn't know there was a difference. So, I called Summit back to see what I could do about sending the new one back and getting the correct one. The guy I spoke to evidently didn't know there was a difference in connector quantity either. He put me on hold to see what he could find out. After being on hold for a half hour I hung up.
Maybe someone can pipe in here and give me a clue on what I'm running into. My goal was to increase the stall speed which my engine builder suggested that I do. He was recommending around 2400. I've attached pictures of the GM one I pulled out, but I can't seem to find any information about it based on look-up of any of the numbers. Anyone know what this TC is?

i believe 6 bolt converters were used in HD applications.

If Im looking at your profile pic, you have a 1973? I dont think 6 bolt converters were used in 73s.

I would use a proper 3 bolt, which correct flex plate if its different

Hey Tiger Joe,
Yeah, it's a 73. It's also an L82 model so does that make it HD maybe? My B&M flexplate has the 6 TC bolt holes.
fwiw, I found an Ebay website selling Torco TC's that said "Mount : depends on availability we can send either 3 pads or 6 pads / both 3 or 6 pads are interchangeable)" so does that mean you can mount a 3 bolt TC to a 6 bolt FP?

All my th350 aftermarket stall converters are 3 bolt even the Nitrous one with anti balloon plate. So are my 700r4 converters and one of those is rated to 600hp not that my trans will handle that LOL

Thanks for the reply BOOT77,
So, it sounds like I could have bolted the 3 bolt TC to my 6 bolt FP then. Hmm, seems counter intuitive to me but then I'm learning how little I know about this stuff. Too bad, I already sent the TC back to Summit, lol!

So, I believe I resolved my issue with the TC and FP. My original FP and TC had six holes, but the new TC had only 3 connection points. My new FP has 6 holes 3 of which are for 10.75" and 3 are for 11.5" that I didn't understand previously. Anyway, live and learn (for me anyway, lol).
Thanks for the replies!

Default Crank pilot Diameter

So the TC saga continues. So I thought I'd better check out the fitment of my new TC. The splines fit on the trans fine but the snout that goes into the crank does not. The specs for TC's crank pilot diameter seems to be 1.7" but my engine is less. Something like 1.68" and the old TC is even less than that and it goes on easy.
There was paint on the snout that I sanded off and wire wheeled it and the crank hole. Goes on about half way but that's it. So what do I do? Keep sanding or send it back to Summit? I can't see being under the car trying to monkey the TC in!

If you sanded ALL the paint off the t.c. boss fit....you may have to really sand the hole in the crankshaft to get all the crud out.
Then smear some grease or antiseize in the crankshaft hole.

Thanks Doorgunner,
Yeah, I tried some silicone spray but that didn't help much. Crank hole is really clean, I can try sanding it some. I'll try the grease or anti seize as well.

3-bolts are probably good for around 7-800hp with good bolts, once above that start considering 6 bolts. I don't think your 6-bolt was a factory piece. You could bolt a 3-bolt converter to a 6-bolt flex plate no problem.

Did you try it with the flex plate on the engine to see if it goes in far enough to put the lugs against the flex plate?

Hey lionelhutz,
Thanks for the reply. Yeah, I'm learning about TC's et, al. My new six hole FP is either 10.75" or 11.5" 3 bolt vs my old FP that had six 11.5" holes. I didn't get that at first but the light finally turned on, lol.
So today I took a dremel to the crank's hole where the TC's snout goes into. Finally the TC seated up against the FP. I also used some Lucas red tacky #2 grease that has anti seize in it (thanks Doorgunner ).

TC snout sanded down.

TC Pic #2

FP crank interface sanded down with dremel.
