Help
The more information you "share" with us here at the Corvette Forum the more likely that someone will be able to assist you in solving the problem with your beautiful 1977 Corvette!
On your "Public Profile" page there is a place where you can enter all the details you wish to share regarding your Corvette. Often when there is a question we go there looking for more details that are frequently in the Postings. Things like any modifications and changes from the original platform are very handy for we the people that want to try and help you. The question regarding whether you have an Automatic or a Four speed is a great example. It is also helpful to know how long you have owned this Corvette and just how mechanically inclined you are can also be helpful. All of us here appreciate having a good running Corvette to go out cruising in and we are happy to try and help you get your problem solved. The more you share the better regarding the specifics of your Corvette as this makes it easier for people who have had similar problems recognize the problem right away.
I myself and re-installing a new fuel tank into my 1968 Corvette this afternoon as the weather in my part of the country is going to get very warm over the next few days. After reading up on this here on the Forum I have learned a few tricks from others to make the job easier and get better results without to "re-inventing the wheel" so to speak. This Forum is the very best source of information for helping us keep our Corvettes running at their peak for the cost of reading a bit of information written by other Corvette enthusiasts.
Best regards,
Chris

Did the car ever happen to sit for a long period?
If it did sit for a long period it's not uncommon for the reverse piston seal to dry up and then you lose reverse. You can try placing the shifter in reverse and revving the engine up a bit to see if it will engage. If it does, it's that reverse seal.
Before doing this, first check to make sure your fluid level is correct as interpon says. If this test proves positive and you're on a budget, you can try changing the transmission fluid and filter and adding a good aftermarket transmission seal conditioner. "sometimes" these will soften the reverse seal and it will work again. It's not an instant cure, you may have to put a hundred miles on it to get the desired results but it's worth a gamble for the few dollars involved. I have had luck with this procedure in the past. Otherwise it sounds like it may be time to pull the transmission and have it rebuilt. Upside is it's just a Turbo 350 and parts are not too expensive. Any trans shop can do it.
Cheers, Greg
