Had issues with the side markers ,tail lamps, and instrument lights not working..Installed new headlight switch didn't fix the problem.Applied power to the tail light lead and the lights worked .Traced it back to the fuse block fuse good but clips that hold the fuse had corrosion .Cleaned clips as best I could ,installed fuse and BINGO all lights working as they should...Very difficult to get up in there , anybody has tips on what to use to clean those fuse holder clips?
Mahalos!
Yes, I have done this repair before as well. Get some Naval Jelly, any hardware or parts store should have it. It's good because it's a gel and won't run. Dab it liberally in the rusted prongs with a small paint brush, let it sit for 10 minutes then rinse it out with a spray water bottle. Blow the box dry with compressed air or a heat gun, even a hair dryer will work. Then give the dry prongs a squirt of WD-40 and you're good to go again.
Cheers, Greg
Dielectric grease is good,,,, just be careful where you put it,,,, it is an insulator and can restrict electrical flow,,, not a good thing on a fuse box.
DeOxIt is probably the best electric contact cleaner and it removes the corrosion from the connector as well. I would use it with a q-tip to keep from covering everything around it. The DeOxIt works very well and gets a very good connection at the point of contact. The use of DeOxIt on my taillight running lights made the bulbs burn considerably better and brighter.
They sell it on Amazon and Graingers also carries it. It is probably the best electrical cleaner I have found that does not spray on. It actually restores the surface of relay contacts and brings them back to life. The bottles they sell are small and might seem expensive until you use it the first time. At that point you will learn why they sell it in small containers as it is very powerful and a little bit goes a long way.
I had a similar issue on my C4 where the fuses were good but no longer made contact even though they were in the fuse-holder clipped in place. It turned out the fuses had aluminum ends and had developed aluminum corrosion in the form of a very thin layer of white powder. The humidity was enough to corrode the fuse contacts and break the connection. I was surprised when I found power at one end of the fuse but not going through the fuse to the other end.
Fiberglass Burnishing Brush and some dielectic grease. Fiberglass Burnishing Brush
Been cleaning electronic and electrical contacts for many years with a Fiberglass Burnishing Brush. Does a good job at cleaning contacts that batteries leaked on as well. It has a million uses.
