1975, stick. Thanks for responding. I have located the clutch NS switch with purple & white wires, but I did not check continuity as all looked well. I'm in the middle of restoration so my entire dash has been removed. I suspect my big foot has pulled a wire off while using the clutch. There is a orange wire (it looks like it was taped to a white wire from the factory) with a bare end that shows continuity when the switch is turned to the start position. I think I should invest in a good, color wiring diagram. The orange (and white wire) comes from the largest part of the wiring loom and turns toward the cabin/instrument panel. Does any of this help?
I had a 78, i was replacing an alternator in the parking lot of a parts store. I did not disconnect the batty. accidently arced the wire from the alternator and the starter would not get power. It turned out to be a fusible link. I would check out the fusible link in and around the starter. I dont know if that is your problem. But this might help, might not. Good luck. At the time, I had never even heard of a fusable link.
I have since discovered the New battery is not holding a charge overnight. I wonder if there is a short in the starter?
A battery that refuses a charge while driving is often times the ALT.
A battery that discharges while engine is off is a parasitic drain.
A parasitic drain can be from a light bulb or other source.
Attach a meter between battery post & battery cable. Keep pulling / inserting fuses until the meter shows zero. There is the faulty circuit.
Another parasitic drain can be a wiper relay.
And also, a bad diode in the ALT. (no charging & parasitic draw)

A short in a starter isn’t common, but what you can try to test this is disconnect and reconnect the battery. If you hear a click from the starter each time you do this, it’s engaging with the flywheel without spinning and using up power. Hope that helps!
