Well the pooling fuel theory seems very likely.
I removed the sniper to install a 1” riser and found some pooled fuel.
unfortunately the spacer makes the tbi unit too high and I can’t fit any air cleaner in my collection except the oddball home made job I used for a project a few years back.
I may drive with the home made air cleaner just to test if the rich condition changes with the riser.
I am using a modeling clay blob to check clearance.
I did a bit more driving and watched the screen a bit. I’m starting to lean towards reverting to carb after considering the host of potential things I need to check and or replace to get the efi really dialed. These items include the intermittent very rich condition, Holley in tank pump fuel sender not showing fuel level properly ( about 1/4 tack lower than actual), getting a cable tach replacement going, switching to relay on the switched power wiring, single plane intake
I have enjoyed the process of tbi conversion. I actually did one on my 77’ vette too.
I’m guessing a few things will hold true regarding throwing in. The towel
on the sniper
- I can revert to carb in a weekend without too much headache or expense.
- I can sell the sniper and hyperspark quickly and easily on eBay
- newer more perfected tbi systems will continue to become available as time goes on
- my very clean 71’ vert is worth good money with or without fuel injection probably not much more or less either way
- I will still enjoy driving my c3 either way
I bought my Holley carb from CCS Performance. I gave them all the specifications of my 71 Vette and they custom built the carb to be compatible with them. I'm running a CCS 650 Pro-street, with no choke, it starts every time and idles great, the performance is shocking! Richard is a great guy and goes out of his way to see that his customers are satisfied, it's not a one time sale, it's a relationship! https://ccsperformancecarburetors.com/
Dean.

wow that does look good. I might give Richard a call. Nice image with the clay blobs showing ample hood clearance space.
I'm running the Edelbrock Performer Manifold with no spacer and two thin gaskets for clearance of the rear pump. The air cleaner pan provides a 1" drop and is formed to fit Holley Carbs front and back. There is also a knockout and a nipple kit for attaching a vent hose on the underside.
I had to get a bit creative with the accelerator cable hookup, but it was actually a fun project and works just fine.
Goodbye Sniper I’m not going to miss you at all!
-the birds nest of wires that are absolutely the wrong lengths to ever bundle neatly
-the pos quality distributor made out of -the most rust attracting metal know to man ( this is somehow the only rust on my car)
-the the need to tune via laptop
-the fuel gauge inaccuracy
-the nebulous fuel distribution issue maybe due to manifold
-the concern that some solid state board will die leaving me stranded waiting for a back order part - all of it goodbye forever!!!!
yesterday I removed all the sniper stuff and reinstalled old school fuel sender and mechanical fuel pump on the side of the block.
Not sure what carb I’m going to run. I think my original carb may be too much. I’ll run an hei dizzy.

The other thing the Engine Masters video did not address fairly is that plugging that wiring harness into a NON-LS motor means what.......where are you plugging those plugs into. ON my Gen 1 SBC, I got no plugs. Are they needed,....I really don't know and don't care. The fact about that video is that it doesn't even produce much more power.......and that is pretty sad given all the hype about fuel injection. You can call me a boomer, dinosaur or whatever.....but on a Gen 1 SBC,...I will stick with a carb. Maybe on later engines, its better.
Ok the carb is back
seems to be running well.
I still have to set total timing after borrowing an adjustable timing light.
I added a relay to power the hei with good clean 12v power.
I think I will shop for another carb, there is nothing wrong with my Holley double pumper I have I just want to tinker with the car.
Pics of my non - ecu set up.
