Default Speedometer trans. leak seal question...

I have a leak around my speedometer connector. I read some archived posts and they referred to the o-ring seal on the outside of the gear housing as well as an inner seal. I don't see the inner one at all. Where is this seal and what type is it?

Remove the bolt and pull the speedo gear housing. The o ring is around the outside of it and the seal is in the center where the cable end enters the gear.Just pull the old one out with a small screwdriver and tap a new one in with a socket.

Looks like the inner one was the problem. It was not seated down very far at all. Of course I had my brother pick up a new one on his way over to my house (before NAPA closed) and its the wrong type. :(

Don't forget to look at the gear while you have it out. The seal rides on it so if it is worn than a new seal won't last long.

The original seal didn't even look bad. Doesn't look like there's anything wrong with the gear/shaft either.

The seal is rubber and is subjected to friction all the time. They don't have to look ba to have lost the ability to seal. Most of the "trans sealers" that you add to the fluid have conditioners that make the rubber soft again to try to fix the leaks. A band-aid at best. Replace it while you have it apart.

Yeah, I am definately replacing everything I can. I didn't think that just removing it and putting it back would somehow magically fix the leak
