So is taking the valve cover off the only way to change the alternator belt with the M/T valve covers, or will one of the fancy Summit brackets fit? i got a 2" longer belt, but it's too long. I ordered one that's 1" longer, but I think it will be too short.
What size motor and the pix is to dark so I will take a shot at this Do you have a small block with the thin brace if you do I punched a big block brace which is cast iron and bolted it to the front block and it fit good and I have tall valve covers plus a spacer. so take a look on corvette central where I punched it plus I have a small block
I suspect that the ALT bracket is not the correct unit. The clue is, it appears to be actually touching the ALT case and will regardless of belt length.
It has too much "arch". I bought a chrome one and it did the same thing. Too much arch, took it back to the store.
I have the "tall" V.C also. You have to get that ALT belt length perfect so the upper ALT bolt is not at the end of its travel and still allow V.C. removal.
Sorry, I do not have a part #.
Without knowing the history of the car, who knows what that bracket came off of?
I have a 427 and it has the same lack of adjustment. I was able to over come it by taking the belt off the lower pulley, lay the belt over the alt, the I weaseled it onto the crank pulley. laying the belt. I almost had to use a screwdriver to get it on, but refrained as I didn't want to compromise the belt. It wasn't too bad though. That adjustment bracket is the same one that came with my 69, no ps, no AC. It was born with a 350, I think it's the right belt. The valve covers are probably the main issue.

Reason: added "right' belt comment
That's a nice set-up right there. Never have to "pry" with a wooden stick again.
And it clears the tall V.C. Goes well with the Intake too.
Who makes that?
Note the arrows on the PS belt. That shows that when you put the trans in reverse the belt can go either way.

Take the bottom bolt out of the alternator. That will give you more room to remove/replace the belt.
The belts are done! I had to make a THICK shim. The thin ones weren't doing anything. My Dad's a science teacher, he said "take the thickness of the shim, divide it by the number of pulleys touching the belt, and that's how much it will actually move. It worked
