Default Installed stock shifter: What did I do wrong?

Finally got the engine and transmission put back into my '69. I installed the reverse lockout lever back into the shifter "tube", and screwed on the ****. But it feels like I lost a spring somewhere, as there's no tension to raise the lockout lever. I took the shifter apart, and it's not obvious where a spring would go. So, if someone can help clarify things (and be kind when pointing out my stupidity ) I would greatly appreciate it.

Thanks,
Mike

You drop in the spring just before you install the shifter ball. I just did mine twice

Gentlemen, thank you very much for the help. Things are a lot clearer now. It looks like I lost the spring that goes underneath the shifter ball. I'll look to see if it's hiding under the seats or on the floor somewhere.
Again, thank you!

Once you order a new spring, the old spring will magically reappear. Then you will have a spare spring.

I've been purchasing the key parts that show in sullyman's blowup picture. I believe that's from the Corvette parts book. I've looked at both the Chevrolet Service Manual, and the Chevrolet Overhaul Manual, and couldn't find the rebuild for this "shift lever control".
Does anyone know of a published article that describes the rebuild procedure for this shift lever?
Thanks for any help.

Stopped by the local hardware store rhis morning and picked up a seventy nine cent spring that will do the job. (I expect the original spring will reappear about mid-afternoon now. )

I've got a decent supply of spare parts and duplicate hand tools just because of my life long tendency to lose or misplace stuff.
