Hello again! Doug here. I must defer to you again for some advice.
1979 350 Automatic tranny. The ignition cylinder had become catchy turn off. It would not turn ccw to shut off unless it was forced. This started happening about 2 months ago. Went to napa for silicone spray and tranny fluid today. But today at napa the ignition cylinder would not turn off. The silicone spray did not free it. Once home I disconnected the distributor to shut the motor off and disconnected the battery. From the experience I believe the cylinder has failed. Does anyone think I should start somewhere else or do you agree the failed cylinder is pretty safe assumption? Thanks, Doug

remove lock cylinder.
I didn't heed the warnings and I can't turn mine off. had to pull coil wire
79s don't have that rod. I think that went away in the mid 70s, and was often bypassed with some wire. The 79 does have a little lever at the ignition switch that you push down to remove the key. Is that still intact.

Do you have another key to try?
Yes. I learned the lever on the steering column replaced the earlier design. The key is in the ignition cylinder. The cylinder will not move from the run position. I have a new one from napa. Echlins brand I think. Kind of stuck now.
Plastic star piece doesn't slide off. Dont want to break it any ideas?

YouTube videos, and Jim Shea's steering column papers.
I have gone through Jim Sheas papers but I didn’t see anything about removing this part. It is now cracked in multiple places from gently trying to pull it up. I think it has to do with the turn signal but I am not positive. Does anyone know what it is called and how it it is removed? Thanks!
Have you tried to push something down between the inner part of the plastic and that center spoke? Just can't believe that will not pop out. Good luck with your project.
The C-clip is probably backed out of the shaft slot enough to put pressure on the retainer (stuck plastic part). Not the difference of the spacing between the retainer and the shaft and how at the C-clip has pushed it. Push/Seat the C-Clip back into the shaft then try removing the plastic retainer. Use a flat screwdriver tip aimed into the slotted hole (top of kansas123's pic near arrow) in the retainer opposite of the flat side (bottom of pic).
