I have a dilemma!!! I need to bump the engine over to find top dead center on #1 but do not have anyone to help use the ign switch and have barely enough room to hook up the batt post on the starter. If i could find a way
to hook up the other lead that goes to the "S" terminal from topside i would be golden. Any thoughts?
On my 4 speed car I powered the solenoid at the clutch switch. With the bump switch hooked to battery positive, I was able to alligator clip the connector of the wire leading to the starter solenoid.
Not sure on C3's....but on C2's the purple wire that goes to the 'S" terminal on the starter has a connection on the firewall just to the driver's side of the distributor up on the firewall where the loom/harness runs. You can unplug it there and attach your bump starter button there.
Another way is to put it in high gear and rock the car forward or backwards -whichever is easiest- to rotate the engine. Just make sure to take it out of gear if you use the bump starter or key!
I vote turn the crank with a socket on the balancer bolt as well. Trying to bump it to stop right on TDC can be madding if not impossible.
However, if your insisting on a remote starter. Clip power wire on Alternator large stud. S wire on connector just to passenger side of distributor on firewall, one wire plastic connector.
as my patience thinned i did end up using a long breaker bar, extension and socket. Hard on the gut but everything went well !!!! Thanks to all for your input.
I have spun my engine over a few times but also do it with an breaker bar and a short extension with a socket for the Balancer's bolt. I have high compression in my 427 so I remove the spark plugs before attempting top turn the engine over by hand. Without the spark plugs it is much easier to rotate the engine! Glad it worked out for you as turning the engine over a tiny bit with the starter motor is tough to get it where you want it easily. I stopped using the starter a long time ago and use a 3' breaker bar.
