Having problem with the headpipe donut gaskets staying together. They are a pain in the neck to even get them on over the flange and they are also very soft and break and split very easily. In the very far past
they made gaskets that were very hard and had a snug fit (not an impossible fit). I got gaskets from a well known corvette supplier and from Fel-Pro and were the same type. Does anyone know of a supplier that
makes a more durable gasket?
Measure the diameter of the donut sleeve for your pipe, some are different sizes (some made at the exhaust shop are random sizes...)
Mine used a FEL-PRO 9587 donut which is 2-17/32 inside diameter and just fit the sleeve nicely had some flex to it rather than some of the sintered ones that have very little give at all
Get mine through rockauto or summit depending on what else i need

Yes I do have the sleeve in the head pipe for the donut gasket to fit over. the Fel Pro gaskets as I said were of a graphite material that I could crush with one hand. The tighter i made it the gasket started to disintegrate between
the exhaust manifold and the head pipe. I will give Mahle a call and see what they can offer.
Ralph, that is exactly the material that was used until whatever years after 1971. Of course they stopped using asbestos for health reasons. I guess i will be calling RockAuto and Summit tomorrow and give them some measurements.
