Default Running Hot my two cents

I found that having a bigger than stock spoiler and getting the most power full electric fans worked for me and you need to have a spring in the lower hose watched mine collapse on first startup after new engine. I run 190-200 on 100 Plus degree days in the central valley .Did install a pusher on front for my new AC condenser on a seperate switch. I run 10.5 compression on the engine. Good luck to you been down this road more than once

gkull,
Rad is Cold Case supposedly direct fit for C3 Vettes. March serpentine systems evidently uses Edelbrock water pumps and that's what I've got. Yeah, I also wondered if these fans and maybe not the greatest. I may have to get better ones like the Spal's you mentioned. The fan restriction comment is why I thought about maybe putting a pusher in the front but that sounds like it's not the way to go. I have a 160-amp alternator, so lack of volts is a non-issue. Agreed on the auto trans issue, wish it was a manual, may go that way at some point in the future if I can stick with all of these challenges that seem to come my way on this car!
Thanks for the feedback.

After reading aobut your new sensor if its not matched to your gauge it could be off again. You can try to see if it matches what you hand held unit says but you may have to test it like you did the original and get another Wilcox adjustable resistor. They are sold by Ecklers now. I think we lost Ernie and Wilcox is now done

And about the heat I think its about the Higher performance as well now that you are letting us know what has happened. THe stock lame motors all ran much cooler than anything that you but higher compression too, more timing, headers and are squeezing more HP out of. You may have to take it for a ride on the highway and see what it maxes out at for temp.....My HO 327 was close to 450 hp and would stay about 190/195 around 75mph but would climb to 200/210 when I drove steady at 85 mph. Im guessing this new motor had the block cleaned and baked so flushing the system probably wont help but mine was pretty clogged up and flushing it really made a huge difference.

my big block stays right around 180/185 degrees all the time but its only 375hp or so...nothing spectacular due tot he heads being old junk....motors fun but still needs to breathe

Thanks RR,
Yeah my block was a clean warranty (CE) replacement LT-1. My engine builder said it 10.0 CR but he went with flat top pistons vs. the domed forged ones it came with. I think it's that I'm just not used to the change in the amount of heat increase. Didn't see that one coming. Lol
Thanks for the reply, good info.

So you are not over heating ,you are worried about engine compartment temps. Get it on the road and drive it & if it cools the engine properly. Then wrap the headers if your concern is under hood temps.

Ok. I see. I would not trust that temperature gauge. If your temps are from the gun then I understand. I suspect that you are not overheating. You cannot just stick some sensor in the hole that fits. Check the calibration of your gauge with your temp gun....... but I really think you are going to need an adjustable resistor and the APPROPRIATE sensor. I will go get my experiment with generic sensor and share with you..... gimme a few minutes.
Your Engine should be easily coolable. If anything your fan(s) may be undersized but I doubt it. Anyway..give me a sec.

Water temp sensor like what one gets from the parts store that send info to the water temp gauge. Bought if from one of the Vette parts vendors, don't recall, prob Summit. Yeah, I may not have a problem it just seems too hot from my previous experience with mostly factory setup, and I don't recall things getting this hot such that you can't touch it.
Thanks the comments.

Here is my experiment with a temp sensor that was suggested "may work". It obviously does not. The earlier part of the thread is about the Willcox Adjustable Resistor (and yes, it is wonderful).

As you can see not just ANY temp sensor can be placed in the hole.
