I have a water leak as the car sits in the garage. It seems to be coming from one of the block gaskets.
5e one under the idler pulley. It’s 69 427/400, I ordered a set of gaskets from Zips and they came in
cork. Now the one one the car I can see squeezing out seems to be a regular black gasket.
could someone tell me which is the correct gasket to use. It does not leak when the car is running.
maybe dissimilar metals.? Thanks for your advice. Jim
I've run an aluminum water pump on my iron block for years with no problems.
same... I bought one from skip white 10 years ago and have been running it without issue other than I needed to double up gaskets to clear my aluminum timing chain cover.
I have not seen cork gaskets in years. They could be like OEM replacements. They work. You just need to TQ them down lightly in an alternating pattern to make the pump square to the engine block.
I dressed up an engine build with a set of fancy 12 point bolt kit. The new motor had Stewart stage IV super aluminum water pump and leaked from the first fire up. I retorqed all the pump bolts and it still weeped.
I finally just pulled the pump. The problem was the machined bolt surfaces were shorter than a standard pump and a bolt or two were actually bottomed out and never tightened. The heads and washers touched but never compressed the gaskets and would weep . I ended up grinding every bolt about a 3/8 shorter and chased the threads
Thanks for that. That’s what I thought about that stud for the idler pulley.
we’ll see trying to push it until winter . There are a few shows left.
thanks again. The worst part is getting the water back in it ,I think.
Hi, over the years I've tried lots of different gaskets but have pretty much settled on only using Felpro. Never had an issue with them. Here are some options for you, and I've found that OReilly's carries or can get Felpro for most any need, quickly. What timing cover gasket are you using?
I have the All-Star alum timing chain cover with the thin Felpro bluestripe paper gaskets and the water pump clears perfectly with a single gasket -BUT my water pump does have the perfectly flat headed screws on the rear cover...

A FINE, top-shelf water pump! Worth making it work.
Mine has the idler pump stud for one of the bolts. I picked up fel pro locally.
that’s what I will use . And check the bolt lengths the other side has a stud
for brackets from the air pump.

in my case its the pump body that touches the timing cover in the center, I have the thin paper gasket on the cover. my water pump is not the "vette specific" pump but rather a regular performance short water pump. I just had to double the water pump gaskets and all is well but the pump practically touches the cover.
