No, the rings have to come off. The alignment tools have to clamp onto the bare wheel, and cannot be clamped to the trim rings.

Thanks Lars.
Also, thanks for your Qjet tuning and choke setting writeup. My 73 L48 4 speed (dead bone stock with emissions equipment, plus I did distributor recurve) starts per owner manual. Depress accelerator (cold), release, turn key, starts immediately. Fast idle 1,300 rpm.

Good job on the work, Doug!
Isn't it remarkable how nicely these cars run if you simply set them up correctly and do good work instead of hacking them..?

Yes. I also had my 64 Impala SS 327 300 original AFB start one click of the key. I always work until all my cars start and run per owners manual / service manual. I was taught many years ago by my father and grandfather to read service manuals and understand how things are designed to work. And your input over the years is much appreciated.
Would it be better to take the trim rings off before the alignment (to prevent the tech. from bending the trim rings while removing and reinstalling them)?

yes 100%
Can guarantee they will alt least ding them putting them back on
If you don't mind driving to Hackettstown, there is a shop called Dimension Auto Repair that does alignment work on all kinds of 60s and 70s cars. They did my friend's 69 Vette and my 77. You can trust them with your car.
Depends on the alignment machine. Some clamp to outer edge of rim bead, some to the inside. Mine actually clamps to the tire itself. Doesn’t touch the rim at all. Reduces the risk of scratching someone’s $4,000 set of rims.
