So cruising about 55 I suddenly got a squealing noise and I look down and temp rose a little more than normal. Backed off mph and squealing stopped and temp held. Come to down shifting to a stop light temp needle comes down. The temp needle has never done that. Ever. Start getting back up to 55 temp rises and levels off. Get home no leaks anywhere from the pump. So. Is it bad water pump bearing, thermostat, or loose and worn out power steering belt? Any info would be appreciated. Thanks.

Start your motor and use a mechanic stethoscope on the case of the alternator and the water pump. If its a bearing you can hear it when you change engine rpm.
Clutch fans can fail but they ussually dont squeal. Bearings squeal, fan belts squeal.....
If The motor is hot the clutch fan should be tight but not seized or easy to turn. At highway speeds the fan is along for the ride, the air flow does the cooling. I would lean towards an issue else where. I would start with the water pump since your temp gauge changes, is it mechanical or stock electric.
As for the alternator i have never had one that went bad change other gauges readings other than the voltage reading. Do you have an amp gauge or volt gauge....

I do not have a volt or amp gauge. Just stock console battery gauge. My fan turns all the time. I’ve also read where it could be a power steering belt but that wouldn’t make the temp gauge change would it? I’ve never seen my temp gauge come down at a stoplight then start going back up and level off. Previously at a complete stop the temp needle stays what it is. Never dipped. I believe it’s a bearing. But water pump hasn’t leaked any and only has about 2000 miles on it. I have a mechanical water pump.

Sounds more like air in the coolant system that is possibly accompanied with a bad or sticky t-stat.
How long were you driving before this happened?
about 15 miles. It squealed running about 60 mph. Notice temp started to climb still staying under 200. Let off gas and the squealing faded. Temp was holding steady. Just cruised around 45. Speeded up after a while and it did it again. Slowed down it stopped. Got to town stopping and starting at stop lights and temp needle would come down then climb on acceleration and leveled off at cruising speed of 45. I didn’t push it harder because I wasn’t sure what it was. A sticky thermostat wouldn’t cause squealing would it.
If it happens again pull over, open the hood and operate the carburetor throttle by hand to determine the source of the noise.
Yea. I wasn’t in a spot to pull over the other day. Now I’m afraid to drive it very far. Ha. Now that I think about it several weeks ago I heard it squeal only for a couple seconds when I was sitting still and went to backup. Gave it a little gas and it was Like a chirp. This time it was a lot worse.
This is a wild guess. Perhaps an impeller in your water pump broke off. The squeal could have been a piece of the pump getting stuck in the housing. Jerry

maybe. I’m going to start with belt and move on from there. Cheapest and easiest first fix besides a thermostat which I will also do. Can’t hurt.
