PS belt doesn't wrap around water pump pulley?
You couldn't determine source of sound when you revved the engine?
yes it wraps around water pump pulley but a slipping PS belt wouldn’t cause the temp to rise would it?
No I couldn’t. I will get someone to rev engine while I get under the hood tomorrow.

if the belt is slipping on the pump it might. Did you check the tension?
By any chance did you try to spin the ALT pulley before installing the new belt?
Also, for what it's worth, fan belts get 90% of their traction on the sides of the belt and sides of the pulley. Most people think the belt has to drop down into the pulley to get a good grip. Not true.
Having said that, it seems that according to previous posts on this forum that belts are not what they used to be. More specifically, the width.
When auto parts stores started selling belts in metric instead of inches an overabundance of belts seemed to be too narrow. Coincidence? Maybe.
With that trivial information in mind, how are your belts riding "in-the-groove"? High? Low? Just right?

I did not check the ALT pulley. I have replaced the fan belt and tightened the power steering belt. I will probably go ahead and replace the ALT as I do not know how old it is. It was in the car when I bought it. I also need to figure out what amp this car needs. Or what amp the current one is. It's a 3 wire ALT and I have a 454 if that matters. Belts seem just right.

Unless you are installing electric cooling fans or mega stereo no need for more.
okay. Thanks for your help. Much appreciated
Haven’t found a chrome one that is 63 amp yet. May go without chrome. If I went 70 or 80 would I have to update wiring?

70 is the largest Chevy used but doubt you have anything that would put that much of a load on the alternator.
