Default Timing chain cover gasket

I’m changing my timing cover gasket and oil seal. My car has a one piece oil pan gasket that I had installed a couple of years ago. Do I still need to install a gasket on the bottom of the timing chain cover? Seems odd to have a gasket on the oil pan and another one from the timing cover directly together. My oil pan gasket is like the photo. I’m not sure how it was originally done. Engine is still in the car.

If I'm understanding your question, you'll probably destroy the the timing chain gasket portion when you remove remove the cover. I would remove this old gasket portion for the cover, being sure to clean the area well cutting it clean at the pan. Then install the new gasket portion. Be sure to apply gasket sealer to the area where the base of the cover meets the oil pan. This is needed to prevents leaks. Never use 2 gaskets. Hope this helps.

no. drop he pan. clean out the timing gear teeth in the pan. check the rod bearings. replace the oil pump. replace the timing chain and upprer gear. if you pull the cover out with pan on you will pull the gasket out.
the gasket is inside this lip. you MAY be able to tilt cover and scootch it out. but you will never get it back in.
if the cam and-or chain have been done recently, the other option is pull the seal and replace it without pulling the cover.

I must say putting that cover on when pan is mounted, is a pain and a good bet it will leak.
I have successfully done it on cars where you couldn't drop pan
