Alright my fellow rebuilders, I have a question. What is the best gaskets to use on a engine rebuild? The heads dont need to be milled so Im just looking for the best gaskets to use so I wont have to do this again for a long while. I have seen a lot of different brands. Used Fel pro in the past but now I see they even offer the regular vs Ultra seal. So what do you all recommend? By the way its a 69 427 with edlebrock intake. Thanks,
Anymore it’s a matter of who has what you need without waiting a year. With that said for oil pan and valve cover gaskets you can’t go wrong with the molded one piece styles that Felpro offers with the crush rings built in. They are pricy, but worth it IMO. As for head gaskets first see what’s available in your quinch size and go from there.
Have always used Felpro and also Victor. Proper installation is more important than anything. Many get overtightened.
I learned a lot about quench in my last performance engine build. In the past with no decking always used FelPro perma-torque. These are good but compressed they are close to .040, way too thick and you lose good quench.
And Commetic make really nice gaskets as well.
But my Small block is all Fel-Pro. And don't buy the kits. Get the high end everything. Worth a few hundred extra bucks!
Never fun doing it twice.
I've used Fel Pro for fifty years and never had a problem.
I worked in an auto parts store for over twenty years, selling Fuel Pro and don't remember ever having one come back as defective.
The FELPRO.....Are they cork, composite or rubber? Isn’t the material more important than the brand?
I was doing a HPDE. The car started to smoke. In the pits, it looked like the valve covers were leaking. I drove to a store and picked up FELPRO gaskets with the crush ring. There was still some weeping.
When I got home, I put on composite Mr. Gasket. The weeping stopped.
Understand, I am not saying one brand is better than another. BTW, my mechanic likes 100% cork.
Thanks for the info. I'm just replacing the intake manifold gasket not pulling the heads so don't think i need to worry about quench. Think i will go with felpro. But what do they mean the "gaskets with crush part"? Does anyone know what the intake manifold gasket # for '69 427 hi perf, rectangular ports?
In the middle section of the heads there is a hole with c shaped cutouts above and below the hole I believe they are for the old style thermo choke. It was covered by the old gaskets so, I guess I will need the ones that cover this section. Is this correct?
Thanks for the help.

thats the exhaust cross over...for performance and try8ing to solve any heat sink issues with the carb, cover those holes. IF you run the divorced choke original intake then you would want to leave the passenger side open...i wouldnt myself. In your case you are using the Edlebrock intake so cover them, they arent used
