That was my first thought too. It does reach over as far as the passenger side where there is a clip for a flasher. But I also have a flasher under the center console with a heavy purple wire on one terminal & the other terminal has one heavy & one lighter red or pink wire on the other terminal. There is no flasher in the fuse block !
comes from under the dash area and should go through the firewall right of column through grommet and meet the back up switch at the trans in front of firewall
OK........It's definitely for the back up light switch ! But why is it inside of the car ? Not sure how I would get it thru the firewall with the plug on it. Not that it matters as there is no switch on the transmission anyway. And probably won't be after looking at the price for a switch and related parts. It would be nice to get it into the engine compartment where it belongs while I still have the dash apart ! Just one more strange things about this car. I just noticed the passenger side dash pad has the map pockets. I'm pretty sure 68's did not have those !!!!!

Welcome to the club....I call my 1968 a "Frankenvette" due to all the non-original changes made over the years. Some I like....has a later 70's style hood with no vacuum wiper door mechanism.

I have my center console removed right now. I'll try to remember and take a look. I recently repurposed the clutch-interlock switch to the PRNDL switch for an Automatic.....
Sure looks like the colors for the back-up lights. I have not had them on mine for like 35+ years--- was not hooked up when I go the car with the M-21, and I did not bother hooking them up when I installed the Richmond ROD. I recently installed a 200-4R and I did use the other 2 leads for the Park & Neutral start interlock (was for clutch before I went to automatic).
some people slit the grommet to get the wire through, i removed the black plastic connector from the terminals and pushed wires through, then reinstalled end.

No map pockets and atleasst one of the holes near the brake booster is very large and will fit easily. As stayed if your grommet Doesnt have a slit then just use a fresh razor blade to make one of the holes accessible.
The po may have added a new harness and never ran it. I had the same experience
A new question....Does the big fat harness coming down to the right of the tach to the center console & gauges go in front of the ac duct or behind it ? The AIM drawings are not a lot of help when it comes to routing things. Good at showing where they end up is all !!!!
I've got over a week in this dash installation and still don't have any of it in yet ! I've had the speedometer & tack panel in and out 10 times at least so far. Yesterday I took the top pad out because I thought I could see better. NOT So now my plan is to put that back in and then do the center console and gauge cluster first and then try the speedo & tach last. If that doesn't work I'm ready to push it outside and set it on fire !!!!! LOL
More mysteries with this car ! I just looked and it doesn't even have back-up lights. So I don't have to worry about the switch !!!
Well, it may not have any now, but it certainly did when new. They were located in the lower valence panel to the outboard sides of the vertical bumper sections:
