I see another thread where the correct oil filter for my 72 350 base engine is the PF-25, but the previous owner has a PF-454 filter on there now. I assume I should replace it with the PF-25, but wondering why he would have used the PF-454. Is there an advantage to either one?

The PF25 is 4.338" tall.
The PF454 is 3.306" tall.
If you want to use a better filter, both filters are available from WIX, which is a better filter than the AC filter. Part numbers are 51069 and 57099 respectively, which is the same as the NAPA "Gold" filters (which are actually the WIX filters) sold under NAPA part numbers FIL 1069 and FIL 7099 respectively. These WIX filters are all 21 micron filters.
The PF1218 is actually 5.178" tall.
The PF25 is the filter that most people would recognize as a "stock" size filter for a small block. The "shorty" PF454 is often used if there are header clearance issues that need a shorter filter.

What exactly is the difference with the sizes? Does it matter in anyway besides clearences? Is either size more efficient or better? You would think that there is some type of calculation they used to establish the 'stock' size, no?
I can't help but think there is a 'that's what she said' joke in here somewhere.
exactly the one i use..last 3 changes anyway..

Lars,

I am currently using a K&N HP-2002 and would like your opinion as to is it an acceptable suitable sub for the filters that you mentioned/listed??
