Default Last call for cams.

I’m just talked to the guys at comp cams. They must answer the question a million time a day. Just heard it in there voice so I kept it brief. Com cam. 12-464-8. This was our brief talk. Looking for a roller replacement with good torque. 180 cc 64 camber brodix head will be used. What do you think.

There is a lot more involved that just mentioning what heads you have.

If you can find and download a copy of Comps CamQuest, that program will ask you 18 - 22 questions about your setup and your intensions.
You have to have all your tech specs before hand to get a reliable answer. The program will then show you the top 5 or 6 cam choices and HP estimates.

You're running some nice Brodix heads, and then installing a cam with duration of only 202/212 @.050 with an operating range below 5,000 rpm??

Hi lars
I no your right on this one buddy My intention was to ditch the smog head and get something else so why not brodix. There are one of the smallest I could find within the budget that were aluminum and won’t be to wasteful. The cam I want good fuel economy ,good idle and good vacuum but strong torque without changing torque converters or the rear gears. I plan on driving it to cape cod and NC. The cape I have a cottage and NC is where my grand children are. When all done I’m going to do another like a 68 barracuda. I’ll save some of the bigger stuff for that. Some guy find camshafts easy while I struggle. These are my other consideration Howard 110315-12 and melling 22135. I’d use the old heads but I’ve been told they have poor casting and are prone to cracking more so reusing them. If you no a cam that’s a little better along with my need I’m all ears and trust me I won’t be offended. Lol
Thanks Bubbagum.

Hey Headup
Brodix 180 cc 64. Stock bottom end. Cast crank, king aluminum bearings original forged flat top pistons seal power rings and a ported crossfire injection. Nothing special. Budget build. The block had 68000 original mile so thing on the bottom end measure good. I’ll look at the sight you mentioned they alway ask for deck height that’s where I always stop. So I guess I’ll have to educate myself more on doing deck height. It’s really the crossfire. You can only get so much out of it even porting but honestly I’m not looking for much anyway. Just a good match. I had a big block 396 for years when I was a kid and had a Edelbrock Tarantula manifold on it. Very impressive back then but If I had it now I’d would go with a duel plane because it would have been a better match. So I get it. I’m just hoping for an easy solution from someone that did a cam and head swap.
Thanks again. I’ll try that sight.

No not really he said I would be able to run it for start up for sure but running it on that computer is questionable. I plan on upgrading it anyway. The computer works but with the upgrades, it’s going to have to be changed. I do know vacuum plays a big roll. I’m going to try and fire it first on the old one. The one step at a time thing. I’m taking throttle body’s apart to so a lot of stuff to handle on startup before swapping computers. I called comp cam maybe 2 days ago and they gave me this one. 12-464-8. Looks like a heavy lift. So i’m still doing my search. Compression ratio is another factor. Now if I go new computer do I get an upgrade on knock sensors. Lol It will never end.Haven’t thrown the towel in yet. I can see why everyone goes carb but I’m looking for small improvements. Buccaneer is the only one that I found that’s made a big dent in the crossfire. I just want a small percent of that. BTW. I checked out the lifters you talked about. They look exactly like 3 other “well known” brands.Wonder if the plunger style are the same or if there any difference at all between them.Very interesting.

Bubbagum,

When using a cam selection program as I mentioned you can enter 9.025" for the std deck Ht Chevy 350.
This formula puts the piston top at 0.019 in the hole. But I just enter 0.20.
You also need valve sizes which should be 2.02 & 1.60
May need head gasket volume which gets a little harder to find.
But anyway, that is a nice cam program that allows crunching numbers and a graph showing expect HP results.
