Default Which rear spring should we use?

My cuz's 70 vert needs a new spring. He's leaning toward a composite with new Gabriel gas shocks (already on the car). We're gonna replace the spring while the T/A's are being rebuilt. We're also rebuilding the front end as well. Of note is the front springs were upgraded to 460's.
Confusion mounts as to which to pick, 7 or 9 piece steel or composite.
Then if you chose composite which one? How do I know whick size 2 1/4"
or 2 1/2"?
He wants a good balance between handling and ride quality.
Help us out...

Bugster57,

You might search the forum archives, lots of discussion pro & con on steel vs composite. Composite springs have been in use on most Vettes since 1981, and all Vettes since 1984, so I think the technology is ok.

Some of the archive threads note problems with replacement steel springs, others don't have any problems with steel springs. Some vendors offer a service of reshaping steel springs.

I decided to go with a TRW style spring from Muskegon Brake, but I know from the threads that others are pleased with their composite springs from VB&P.

The choice of shocks is important to the performance of a composite spring. The archives have several threads about which shocks worked better with which springs.

I can't give you any feedback on the spring I purchased - the car is currently in pieces in the garage. :smash:
