Default Steering question 1978

What is causing this issue and how to correct it?
If turning right, you let go of the wheel and it autocorrects itself back straight.
If turning left, you let go of the wheel and it stays turned left and I have to manually turn the steering wheel to the straight position.
Thanks

I believe it is the adjustment in the PS control valve.

Enough caster difference might do this. Have you gotten an alignment recently? Is one wheel further forward than the other in the wheel well?

But the steering valve seems most likely.

In a stock PS setup, you need to balance the PS control valve. There is a special friction nut under the round cap in the control valve for this purpose.

GR8 post and replies!!!
I especially follow any and all posts bc I have a 78SA myself..
One thing for sure with mine is unless I am missing something here mine never auto corrects by itself and I have had the usual FEA and brand new tires and it steers dead straight...
In any case is the procedure you are referring too in the GM Service Manual?
If so can you lead me to the correct place in the GMSM?

In your case, I bet you have almost zero caster, and your steering valve is adjusted correctly. With the engine off, can you turn the steering wheel to turn the wheels? With zero caster, you only fight friction. With positive caster, you must also overcome gravity, and lift a fraction of the weight of the car.

Im sure the valve instructions are in the shop manual. I'll add a link if I can find it online.

EDIT: PDF instructions at Zip

You might want to 'center' the valve and then get an alignment.

You can check the adjustment of the PS control valve by getting the front wheels off the ground and starting the engine. Even 1/8 turn of the adjuster screw off center will make the steering move without touching the wheel.

You can watch this video. Goto the section for adjusting. In the section of adjusting to control value shows the procedure.

This shows the complete replacement procedure.

your power steering control valve needs adjustment. You tube videos are available to see how to do it. Pretty simple to do.
