Good evening, all,
My electrical nightmare 79 L82 has got me pulling my hair out. My tach stopped working along with other instruments on the center console. The dash lights didn't work so I replaced the light switch. nothing changed but I noticed that the ground connector has overheated. I put in the new switch and the instrument light still did not work and when I turned the light switch to off (full left) it blew the fuse. I am still fighting with the center console instruments issues. I have bought 3 circuit boards and don't want to buy another if I can avoid it. Does anyone have a wiring diagram for the 79 L82?

First and foremost you need to make sure all your grounds are good. While I have no idea where all the grounds are in your car I do know that you can get alot of weird issues when current starts back feeding through other circuits because a ground is bad. Several places out there you can get laminated wiring diagrams from. Probably wouldn’t hurt to get a service manual either.
Try searching with Google. There is a forum member that posted a number of model year wiring schematics. You may have to beak down and buy a Chevrolet Service Manual, they are usually available on EBay and will have have a wiring schematic in the back. From all my reading corrosion of the battery cables, where the negative cable is attached, and other assorted ground connections are common problem causers. If your car has a bunch of non factory wiring connections, my condolences … Bubba may have been the previous owner. Blowing fuses is most likely shorted wires, start looking at all places where the harness goes through the firewall or could have outer jacket torn/cut. Good Luck.
