Hi, some good friends a couple of blocks from us inherited a '71 roadster from her father, this past summer. It's is GREAT condition overall. Yellow, black deluxe interior, a/c, pb, ps, auto. I'm helping them go through the items that may not have been addressed for a while. Besides, it's fun to spend other people's money - and not just ours - on our C3 obsessions.
The carb that's on it appears to be a Holley "Economaster" QJ replacement (6R-5610B) that flows 450 cfm and was designed for fuel economy (really???) vs. performance. So, here are my thoughts (they have the $$ are are willing to put it right):
I'm thinking that the Holley should be used as a paperweight, and I should help them find the correct QJ 7041212, get it rebuilt, and move forward.
I agree.....the 450 Economaster was popular in the late 70's, early 80's......Ummm...it didn't "econo" anything.....it was a lean tech carb which all the rage was going lean back then....if you jet it proper to run correctly...it uses just as much fuel as any other properly adjusted A/F device......
Find a 212 like you say and have it done up by Lars or someone reputable.....
How "numbers matching" is the rest of the car? If the answer is "very" then yes, look for the original carb, but otherwise a service replacement will work (and look) just fine at 1/3 the cost. Lars can advise on what replacement #s to look for.

Good question, and the answer is 'very'. Low miles, her father owned it for several years, born with engine, etc. They have plenty of $, won't waste it, but they're all in on getting a good original carb and getting it rebuilt.
I remember those things. They would come out of the box bolt on the car about a week or two later they. We're in the dumpster. Haven't seen one in decades. Thought they all made it to the landfill.
If I remember correctly Holley would refund your money and didn't want them back.
