Hi everyone,
Im new to the group , I want to install a push to start button my 1980 but i need a good detail or photo of how someone he did it. Please and thank you
Push to start in it'self would be easy.
but you still need to turn the car on and off. And then there's the steering lock. Which could be eliminated. But why would you?
So you eliminate the original switch. Eliminate the steering lock. Now you have to make the column look good. Install a new system or switch to turn the car on and off. All doable but a ton of work considering that turning the key just isn't that hard.
If you have the wiring schematic for your car. Shouldn't be at all difficult to wire it up.
finding idea's on how others have done a similar modification to a earlier car might be a place for Google.
So a bit more negative Nelly. The only way I see a start button makes sense is if you can keep the key in your pocket when you start the car.
Not hard to eliminate the steering lock. Not hard to wire in the push button starter coming off the column mounted start switch. Still have to turn the key to run and then push the start button?
Welcome to the forum. They make kits to add push to start/keyless entry to older cars. I researched these awhile back because my mother was having trouble with wrist pain starting her car. Her situation improved and I never followed through but Summit Racing has several options. Search for "Push button start kit" and/or "Keyless ignition kit".

Good luck,

This got me curious if only bc I had wrist surgery 5 years ago and couldn't so much as pull the cover off my chihuahua sized dog food bin for a few months afterward. Good thing it was my left wrist...lol...was still driving a column key 6 speed as my DD at the time. The keyless conversion systems I found, including Flaming River, will NOT automatically release the steering and shift lock. You're SOL on that function. Only C3 you can convert is a 68.
If you just want a button, that's easy. What do you want the button to do?
The function of a modern car with keyless entry and 1-button engine start is nigh impossible on a stock C3. You need an ECM to run the starter for the correct amount of time (modern cars do this even if you have a keyed ignition), and you'd need fuel injection instead of a carb with a choke.
The keys unlock the steering column Would you leave that unlocked, or still use a key to turn the car "ON'. At which point, you can put a button under the ash-tray flip-up, run it to a relay and power the starter solenoid that way. You'd still have to turn the car off with the key, unless you had a separate switch for IGN ON.
You can replace the 12V socket with a round switch, or the ash-tray with a rectangle that would take several switches/buttons. I've put a charge port in my car, and deleted the HVAC controls with a 3D-printed plate (no switches yet, but there's room for them). A stepped drill bit makes short work of plastic.
Another option would be to put the button where the original key went. Remove the lock cylinder and steering wheel lock mechanism while you're in there, install the new button, takes care of everything at once.

I replaced the ash tray with a momentary push button switch for a line lock solenoid. It would easy to do the same but just send the 12v to the starter solenoid. You would still need to roll the key two clicks forward to power the distributor.
just make sure you buy a push button that has sufficient current capacity
In regards to the steering column I think It would be easier and cleaner if you replaced the stock column with an aftermarket column that doesn't have a column ignition switch. Ididit or Flaming River.
