I have a 79 L82 4 speed car and I'm shopping for a mechanical fuel pump. There are so many out there and of course I'd like a nice American made one. I don't mind paying as long as I get what I'm paying for. Can you give me recommendations?
thanks, Mike.
Difficult to find out where these pumps are actually produced as Interpon found out.. If you google #41240 the first hit is the Airtex . One reviewer posted "Fit my 1978 L82 Corvette just like the OEM AC 41240. It was the correct length unlike the longer SP brand. Box says made in Mexico btw.".
I will be replacing a Holley which years ago cost $56 and now cost $145. Hard to justify an extra 100 for a shiny one but claims Holleys are made in the USA.
Though you have to fab the inlet and outlet.....I run the Holley pump too...mine is the Dorton series 130gph that requires a regulator......they are rebuildable and last damn near forever.....There is a 7psi version of this pump too.
As far as OEM replacement is concerned......the biggest issue is the pump lever rod not being peened hard enough to the body that holds it in.....
I bought a Carter for my 82' Z/28 BTW in 2020 and it is working fine........
I believe it is the quality control that is the issue.....somehow the bad ones are getting out, not all of them, in fact most of them are ok.....but you hear about the bad ones only.
