I took my 81 4 speed to a shop for an unrelated issue, when I got the car back he told me he heard some transmission sounds and recommended I take it to local transmission specialist. I was quoted at 1250-1500 for labor and unknown for parts. If it just needs a bearing kit $350 but entirely depends on the condition of the gears. I had the clutch replaced a few years back at 66000 miles and changed the transmission fluid a little bit later after that. When the clutch was replaced the pilot and throwout bearings were replaced. Does this seem like a reasonable quote? Would this be considered a rebuild?
I've had a few different mechanics check out the car over the years and no one mentioned this sound being a problem, it's kind of always sounded this way. Are there other bearings in the transmission that need replacing? Could the newer pilot and throwout bearings already have failed?
Before I did anything I'd bring it to another tranny shop and ask if its a problem. Could be a simple U joint , rear end bearing, throwout bearing or could be NOTHING. Im always leary of a shop telling me I have a problem instead of me finding it first.
