Default 1973 Power Steering Pump

The PS pump on my 73 SB is sickening. The peeling paint, rust, and caked on grease is definitely an eyesore. The good news, is that a few years back and I changed the hoses along with the valve, so they bare ok. The PS System fluid is the ONLY liquid that doesn’t drip on my garage floor, a real MIRACLE. My first thought is to remove the pump/bracket then doing a thorough cleaning, and a good coat of paint. The pump looks bad enough to be the original, so I am thinking it may be wise to have it rebuilt. Does anyone know of a rebuilder that they have used? Was the original paint sheen semi gloss, or flat black. Thanks for everyone’s help.

Boy..no leaks..i may not touch it..
my first instinct is a can of NON flammable brake cleaner and rags to clean..
semi gloss if needed through a paper towel tube to control overspray and or masking with cardboard just to lightly clean bare metal.
wait for leaks to really paint out of car.
this link may help with paint/ ‘rebuild’..

I used epoxy appliance paint for better chemical resistance when i removed it.

I really hate to remove the pump, but it is a real eyesore, the bracket looks pretty bad too. It is never any fun to fix things twice, that is why I am considering having the pump rebuilt. I am going to do some detective work, and see if the OEM pumps have a stamped p/n or date code.

Mine was about the same
The pump is one of the most simplistic things going, right up there with the oil pump. If it's working fine, a reseal kit and a little paint (I powder coated the can) and some bench work and it'll look better than new.

No special tools needed. If you don't want to open it up then cap off everything and stuff some rags in the neck and tape it closed, clean and wire wheel / sand blast (carefully) and give it an enamel rebuild
