Default side pipes

saw an 80 that had side pipes. where collector came down there where 4 tubes facing toward the in side underneath. car.
any idea wht these are for. these are on both sides.

Sounds like normal Hooker or Dougs side pipe headers

Yes I think I have a clue.
those tubes are for the engine exhaust gasses to flow through.
Commonly referred to as headers.

Can you post the photo? Your description is confusing.

Here's an 80 with side pipes, normally aspirated.

If they were pointed forward inside the engine compartment, they were likely for a turbo setup, like the one in this thread.

I beleave the O P is viewing the 'Hooker style' sidepipes from the outside of the car, referencing the collector on the outside where the four head pipes appear to be " going inside" under the rocker panel..

.
So what you saw is normal for that style.
Many other cars and trucks run that style side exhaust also. , ,
