Which fitting on the rack is pressure in? top or bottom?

High Pressure is the outboard, lower port. It should be larger in diameter with 18mm threads. Of course, if you have the adaptors in already then you can't tell the difference.

Don't hook them up wrong (like I did!) Luckily I just had to replace the outer seals. I suggested to them that they make ID'ing the fittings more idiot proof. They said they would look into it. I guess they haven't done it yet. If you go to bleed the system by turning the wheel from side to side and it starts VIOLENTLY shaking from side to side, they are hooked up wrong!

This is an easy way to remember on all Saginaw gears and nearly any power steering gear from any manufacturer. The low pressure return port is always nearest the input shaft. They want low pressure, low friction seals on the input shaft so the steering returns easily.

If the high pressure line went to the outside port, high steering pressures would cause the lip seal to press very hard against the input shaft and potentially cause high torque and steering returnability problems.
