I currently have an Edelbrock air cleaner that measures 14" diameter and 4" from top to bottom. I have 2 problems with this cleaner: I don't like the look of the Edelbrock cover and the distributor presses into the air cleaner. I'm considering replacing it with a KNN Extreme Airflow Assembly but I'm confused about the dimensions of the KNN. In the Summit catalog they have a KNN that is 11" wide and 3-1/2" deep. Will this KNN fit correctly and will I have any decrease in airflow with the smaller cleaner vs. my existing Edelbrock? Thanks!
My understanding is that the K&N filter improves airflow better than the paper filter you have, even though it's technically smaller. At any rate your horsepower gain or deficiency should only be about 3hp....hardly noticeable in my opinion.
I have the same dilemma as you, I have a poor looking Moroso cleaner and am looking at a Holley Hi Tek, but don't know if it will fit under the hood.
If you like the look of the K&N and it will fit, then go for it.
well...the it's pretty much in agreement that K&N flow better....but dont necessarily filter better than paper elements. Newer cars with "box" type filters have trouble the the k&n filter sealing in there, a LOT of the time air force will literally just lift the k&n up and air will go right around it.
I just know from experience, i was running a k&n in my 89 camaro just to see how it worked, and i found a 3 inch dragon fly in the throttle body just after the first test run...so it obviously wasnt filtering so well. This was the older style circle filter too. the sad part was i didnt even notice and power gain at all.
I've found that looking for power from an air filter is really just a waste of time, and if it's a carburated engine...it's essentially useless. Just stick with your paper...
