Default Distributor clocking

I’m sure this issue has beaten into the ground! I’ve looked at my assembly drawings and I’m also somewhat familiar with distributor clocking but can’t resolve this. If you look at the picture the dist output is almost at a 90* to the firewall but my tach cable is still too short to make the bend. All parts are original and have been hooked up and operating at some point.
i did have the dash out so I re checked the routing underneath, it looks correct but I’m not 100% on that. The engine does start and the timing should be fairly close. Is it possible that it’s one “plug wire” off?

I think your on the right track. If you orient the distributor so you can get the cable hooked up, and move the plug wires accordingly.

A better over-head shot of the distributor and wire orientation would help troubleshoot your problem.

I think it was a service bulletin in '68 that showed a modification to distributor placement to accommodate both the tach cable and the vacuum advance canister. In effect the vac can points directly out the passenger side of the car. This places the vac hose connection on the firewall side of any spark plug wire holders and orients the tach drive connection more toward the steering wheel. I'm sure someone will post the diagram of it if you need. If I remember correctly, in this position, the #1 plug wire is on the tower to the right of the points window when looking at the distributor from the front (not the driver's position).

You can actually do this without removing the distributor.......just move the plug wire two positions clockwise as the distributor gets turned counter-clockwise.......then set timing.
