Default Oil Pump Extension Install

I went to prime the oil pump for the SBC I installed in 79 C3 and discovered I forgot to put the extension shaft in when I installed the oil pump. I can see the slot in the oil pump way-way down through the distributor hole. Can I install the ext shaft from the top through the distributor hole? Thx

Is it because the colar on the ext shaft around the base where it connects to the pump will not fit through the lower hole access to the pump?

Gotta drop the pan.

Good news is it's not hard to pull the pan on a C3.

Thx Jim, So drop pan, pull pump, connect shaft to pump and re-install right? Can I drop pane without removing anything else?

You'll have to lower your steering linkage some. This is easily done by unbolting the idler arm from the passenger side of the frame (2 bolts/nuts). The linkage will drop down enough for you to get the pan out of the way.

Yep. You'll need to drop the steering linkage on one end that runs under the pan. As mentioned...idler arm is easiest or just separate it at the joint. Might have to pull starter to get to oil pan bolts.

Secret:
Use a skinny 3/8" drive with about a 10" ratchet extension.

I just came from the shop with that exact question. It looked like that was the best way and it was holding up the entire sterring linkage. Do I need to support it with a jack or will it hang and return to position easily. Thx

OP, did you get the HD pump drive shaft, the one with the metal collar, instead of the plastic one?
