Default Emissions delete

Have a 1979 L82 manual was thinking to eliminate all the emission/smog equipment. Pros/cons? Anyone who’s done it how do I go about it? Only see YouTube vids for C4s. Thx

I don't think you would be gaining a whole lot. My opinion. If you do pull it all off, there will be guys wanting to buy it(winks eye). Don't toss it. For every guy taking emissions off there is an equal amount looking for their missing pieces.

Does Mass have emission testing for cars that old?
If they do not, then go ahead and pull the stuff, but like Rick said, don't toss it out. There are plenty of guys who will buy it all.

Years and years ago. I hit a big bump in the road. All my emissions stuff fell right off!
car picked up 50 HP. Engine bay was far neater.
Never bothered going looking for it.

1978 L82 engine, all emissions going back on it. To each their own. Op hasn't said what his goal is in removing the smog hardware. Maybe just to free up space under the hood?

I believe cars older than 1980 are exempt in Mass

Cars that are restored to original have their place.......it is important to have a few examples as to how it really was.......
But I pull issue with all of GM's emissions equipment from back then........here are my thoughts:
1) This stuff is 40-50 years old now and what people don't realize is that a LOT of Vette's had faulty emissions equipment just a few years after being built.......
2) A lot of this faulty equipment can be invisible, like a stuck heat riser valve, and a stuck EGR.....and eventually cause engine damage.
3) There are so few of these cars now that removing the emissions equipment isn't going to tip the global scales back in balance.......just think if there were 50,000 more restored pre-1970 musclecars on the road......like there once was. Or if I built another 32' Ford from scratch....no emissions there......
4) This stuff is in the way of everything......I mean everything you try to work on under the hood........
5) You will not see much power increase......5-10hp on a good day.....

I totally agree with you 💯 This stuff is outdated and unnecessary and other than keeping it original I see more cons than pros. Just want to clean up my engine bay and avoid any unforeseen issues a malfunctioning emissions system might eventually cause . Are you aware of any threads or videos that can walk me through how to do this properly?

Looks great!!! Exactly what I want. Decluttered, clean, and mostly original otherwise. May I ask you exactly how you went about this? I’d like to remove but I’m not sure what to remove and if anything other mods are needed once removed etc

I bought this one already stripped down but the sale included all of the original pieces to put it back to stock. It had aftermarket valve covers and air cleaner which wasn't really the look I wanted so I swapped out some earlier Vette valve covers and cleaned up the stock air cleaner and bought a chrome lid for it. You just need to remove the smog pump, heat risers and all of the associated brackets and tubing. Pretty straightforward.

you did a great job 👏

where’s the smog pump? Is there more than one heat riser? The one I know is on the thermostat housing. So they hole would need to be capped etc

The smog/air pump is the big contraption front and center on RickM's pic above. The heat risers comes up by the exhaust manifolds (you can see them in the pic's of the stock motor above as well). Mine had the heat shields around the exhaust already deleted as well. You just want to be sure to run your plug wires in from underneath if you run no heat shields. My exhaust manifolds are new ceramic coated.
Yes,I believe there is a port on the thermostat housing that you won't need. Mine had an aftermarket aluminum neck already installed but I picked up a chrome Mr. Gasket neck to replace it. I'm also running a Performer 2101 intake manifold rather than the stock piece.

I'm still hooked up with the factory PCV routing and have all the vacuum lines to the aircleaner flappers in place. I can remove the whole setup with the single aircleaner wing nut and go an even cleaner look, but i like the mix.
