This is the tilt pivot assemble from an '82 tilt/tele steering column. I tore it apart to rebuild it before installing it. Is this part repairable where it's cracked and bent? I'm not a metalwork guy so I need some guidance here. Can it be welded? No idea what metal that is. Some kind of pot metal alloy?
If it's a throwaway/replace situation, I'd try brazing it.
It's basically soldering but with a torch and some rods of soft filler material that melts and holds the broken pieces together.
Who knows, you may get lucky and fix it. Or not, in which case you're no worse off than you are now and maybe you learned something about a new repair technique.
a casting of some sort of aluminum, find a good tig welder & he could possibly weld it but then you would have to either grind his ( hopefully nice welds ) or get a machinist to do his stuff.
Probably be cheaper to purchase either a new or used one.

That happened to my 70 tilt. and tel and if you know how to. put. it back together you will find it on ee-bay but I. did myself a favor and sent the hole column to steering column galore in NY and for $900 dollars they did a GREAT job on mine every thing new they even put in a new shaft plus every thing else the column went. right in with no adjusting anything A+A+A+
Thanks all. I'll look for a replacement. One parts dealer has an 84 (c4) part that looks identical in the photo, but I don't trust photos. Speaking of not trusting, I guess I'll check ebay.
In the meantime I think I can bodge something up, or completely destroy the part trying. 😎
You could look in Jim Sheas papers on t&t columns, they might help you learn what other GM cars have the same part in their columns.
I have followed Jim papers about rebuilding. But I think there are lots of other papers he wrote that I haven't looked at yet. Thanks for the great suggestion.
