I was just in my garage and noticed a large puddle of tranny fluid under my car. I used to see small amounts every day while I was driving it. I have had it in storage for over a month now and noticed a pretty large puddle. Is there any place the fluid can come from other than the gasket?
My *NEW* tranny leaked everywhere. Here's what the shop replaced: front pump seal, front pump bushing, pump o-ring, rear seal, pump gasket, and pan gasket.
And yes, the shift linkage seal, speedo cable seal, and cooling line fittings can leak too.
There are at least 5-6 seals that can be replaced without pulling the transmission. Others have already mentioned some -- shift linkage, speedo cable, shift modulator, etc. I would add that the fill tube also has an o-ring seal. AFter reading the service manual, get a flash light and look for the various leaks under the car. Make sure the car is safely raised on ramps or jack stands. GM sells o-rings but if you go to a Home Depot or auto parts store just buy a variety pack and find the one that fits best. The Shift and cable linkage is not an 0-ring. It is a seal that GM continues to sell.
I have had the same problem with my TH400 for years. The pan gasket starts leaking evrytime the car sits for more than a couple of weeks. I have replaced the front seal, rear seal, dip stick tube O-ring, speedo cable seal and O-ring, shifter shaft seal, and kick down plug O-ring. I have replace the pan with a new GM pan and rubber gasket and it still leaks after a while. I am thinking about getting a aluminum pan in the spring.
