I’m a coward and use grey or black right-stuff around the intake ports and coolant passages. I’ve been bit before running intake gaskets dry. Edelbrock gaskets are thick if it’s not a perfect surface.
Scotchbrite the scoring on the lifters...clean and reinstall.....the fine scrub marks you put on the lifter housing will retain a little oil...and will help with the scoring....which BTW, isn't bad.....these are spider lifters so what lift are you running and what spring pressures?
The carbon is definitely oil......what do the intake valves look like?
Jebby
Was running 145/325 springs in the ProMaxx heads. Lift is .536/.544 lift with 1.6 rockers. Intakes are covered in carbon.
what brand gasoline do you use ? Various Top Tier premiums from a few stations.
what brand oil ? Have been running dino oil for break in. Think it was Castrol.
Do the lifters clean up like it's varnish or are they permanently stained ? Will do this over the weekend.
does this engine "huff" much out of the valve covers when running if you pull the PCV valve from the valve cover ? No huffing, and PCV is generally dry, as is the vacuum hose to the carb
do you see any oil on the floor of the intake ports of the promaxx heads you just took off ?
Hi Eric, This last question may be the most interesting. Made me take a closer look at the intake manifold and heads. Couple of observations:
Looks like the intake manifold has no oil in the intake runners, ruling out oil being pulled in from the PCV to back of carb.
Heads have little evidence of any oil on the floor of the intake runners closest to the outside edge where the manifold attaches. This might tell me the intake sealing was good, otherwise oil would be pulled up from a bad gasket and be consistent all along the intake runner.
There was oil residue down by the valve, with heavy carbon deposits on the valve top and stem. This could indicate it was the guides or seals, and maybe the Viton seals I got were the wrong ones.
Being desperate for a smoking gun, this is the closest I've come to it if this logic holds.
