Default Heater Core Bypass

For those of you that bypassed the heater core, did you just run a bypass hose or cap off the inlet/outlet at the pump? I wanted to make sure that capping off at the pump won't cause any issues.

If you search, you will find a number of posts about by passing the heater core. I purchased brass plug barb fittings from Lowe’s in the two sizes to match the inlet and outlet heater hoses. I clamped them to a short section of heater hose. I did not use threaded plugs, because I was especially concerned about stripping the threads in the aluminum intake when removing the nipple, so a threaded cap could be installed. If my car had a cast iron manifold I would have been less concerned about the threads stripping.

This water pump has an inlet and outlet plug on the pump itself and not on the intake. There are two plugs installed on the pump already but wanted to make sure we shouldn't have a hose between the two plugs. I don't know if not having a hose between the two plugs would cause any type of flow issue.

Appreciate your feedback.

Factory installs an HVAC shut off valve in the heater core line so, you have nothing to worry about when you shut the flow off with pipe plugs.

If you want a simple bypass that will still operate before the thermostat opens, the EMP / Stewart thermostat comes with 3 bypass holes pre-drilled. (Or drill your own).

No need to do the vortec-style intake-to-water pump bypass.
Holes in the T-stat will make it take a tiny bit longer to warm up vs. the vortec style bypass, though.
