I’ve got my 71 back on the street after a seven year rebuild, I went thru most systems but not the AC system. I’m fairly familiar with the components and how the system works but NOT an expert. I would like to get the system going this fall and winter for next summer.
My goals are to keep this system as original as possible as the car has most of the original parts.
I welcome input on checking components of the system, freon, etc. I haven’t turned anything on yet, I wasn’t sure if it would damage the compressor, etc.
This system is all there but has been sitting over seven years. I did accidentally turn the AC switch on and I heard the compressor clutch click. Thanks in advance for the input.

I can’t help much with regards to advice on the OEM system, but if you need a component, let me know, I tore mine all out and replaced with Vintage Air. I can’t say how good the components are, as I never got the OEM system working, but you’re welcome to them if you want.
On my 69' Tri-Power car when I got it the A/C was 100% intact but did not work......so I unplugged the compressor plug and tunred the car on and A/C to on......then slowly plugged the compressor in, not pressing the plug all the way on....just light taps.....until they became longer ones and I was okay leaving it plugged in after I heard the compressor was ok.....so I changed out the schradoer valves and vacuumed it, verified it held....then charged with vintage R12 and the SOB worked.......
Here is what I would do (actually did on my 69, ac had not been run for many years when I got the car 8 years ago):
Remove compressor and reseal and put in fresh mineral oil. (The seal on the compressor shaft is probably bad. Its not hard, lots of vids)
Change out as many o-rings and shraeder valves as you can reach.
Put in new dryer/accumulator.
Replace expansion valve (May or may not be bad but they are cheap. If it is bad you will lose all your r12 to change it.
If it holds vacuum charge it up with 3.25 pounds of R12.
