Default 4L80 Trans

Hey guys, just wondering if a 4L80 will fit in the '79 L82 car? I need overdrive badly.

When I looked into this for my 79, the answer was no without significant tunnel modifications. A 4L60e should fit, though.

EDIT: YMMV it seems. It should fit, perhaps without any modifications at all.

There are a few people with one in their car but the earlier cars that came with TH400 from the factory might have a bigger tunnel. It is more or less the size of a TH400 except the part before the tailshaft is extended back making it longer.

Not what you asked but if you need overdrive "badly" then your easiest option may be a 200-4R; they fit where a THM-350 fit and you can buy them as beefed up as you want. Here are a couple of threads that helped me as I plodded along when I went to a 200-4R:

I always thought they fit , they look smaller than a TKO 5 speed side by side, same drive shaft yoke as a 400 and a sturdy transmission with good gear ratio's

A 4L80E is basically an electronically controlled TH400 with an extra gear. The body size in diameter is essentially the same, along with the bell housing. It's longer, but not by much compared to a TH400.

I have one sitting next to my TH400 on the ground currently. Doesn't look like it would hit the tunnel anywhere. Just need to modify the crossmember for the trans mount and shorten the driveshaft. You'll need to figure out the speedo drive. Some companies make mechanical speedo conversions to convert the tail shaft housing to accept the old style drive, and some make an electronic box that'll plug into the VSS on the trans and have a mechanical output to drive a cable.

No cable needed. My speedometer is GPS. Never have to worry about tire size, or gear ratio. Speed is Speed.

I've got a 4L80e in my 77 (although with an LS engine). No tunnel changes required in my case.
